In this Master thesis, which is carried out within the framework of the Department of Art History, it is aimed to interrogate the “performance”, which is a current form of expression and an art practice, within the context of various variables that shape the art environment. These variables were determined as artists, audiences/participants, art institutions, collectors and art writers/critics. Performance is a form of expression that does not consist solely of body activism, but which contains many layers and meanings conceptually, is difficult to define and can be used as a roof concept for many disciplines in the current art environment.
The first examples worldwide were associated with Futurists and Dada movement in the early 1900s, and since the 1970s, as “performance art” has started to be defined as a separate field. The point at which this concept has reached in nowadays, the meanings contained and the ways of how it is perceived has been investigated by questioning the variables with which it is related.
In the scope of the study, it has been focused on the historical process by tracing how performance relates to concepts that are defined as variables. How these relationships have transformed ways of expression, roles in the art market and institutional structures are discussed. After examining these trends and processes around the world, the focus has been on the processes in the art environment of Turkey. Within the framework of the data obtained from the field researches, it is given how performance is articulated to the multi-art environment of Turkey and in line with the current discussions, it is evaluated how new areas are comprised and can comprise.
