The aim of this study was to investigate shoulder rotator muscle flexibility, range of motion, scapular dyskinesis and isokinetic muscle strength in adolescent tennis players. Fifty four individuals aged between 10 and 18 years, who have at least three years experience in tennis, were included in the study. Rotator muscle flexibility assessed with tape measure; rotator muscle range of motion assessed with Goniometer Pro digital inclinometer; isokinetic rotator muscle strength and angle of peak torque assessed with ISOMED 2000 (D & R GmbH, Germany); scapular movement was assessed by observational video analysis. The results of the pitcher shoulder was compared with the other side. Findings of range of motion and scapular dyskinesis divided into subgroups the individuals with and without glenohumeral internal rotation deficits (GIRD); the individuals with and without scapular dyskinesis. The isokinetic muscle strength compared between these subgroups. External rotation flexibility; internal rotation and horizontal adduction range of motion were lower in pitcher shoulder than in the other side (p<0.05). At 60°/s and 180°/s angular velocity the pitcher shoulder’s peak torque, peak torque body weight and the total work was higher than in the other side (p<0.05). Individuals with GIRD had lower internal rotation peak torque and total work values than without GIRD (p<0.005). The muscle strength values were similar between the individuals with and without scapular dyskinesis (p>0.05). It was determined that sport specific adaptations occurred around the shoulder complex in the adolescent tennis players. Early detection of these adaptations is very important in terms of identifying athletes at risk. These changes, which may become permanent in the later period, can lead to severe and irreversible injuries. Development of sport specific prevention programs for these injuries is very important for adolescent tennis players.
