It is hard to determine balance
problems with conventional balance tests for problems recurring more by day like
Dizziness. For this reason Head Shake – Sensory Organization Test (HS-SOT) has
been developed as a modification of Sensory Organization Test (SOT). The purpose
of this study is to evaluate the specificity and effectiveness of HS-SOT on patients
with normal SOT scores despite of dizziness complaints. The results of 20
individuals between ages 20 to 51 with dizziness complaints tested with HS-SOT are
compared to 20 healthy ones. The participants have been tested with HS-SOT in
accordance with VNG and DHI. On the 2nd and 5th conditions of the standard SOT,
HS-SOT has been applied to the participants on three different planes (yaw, pitch,
roll). When the scores and score ratios are evaluated between the two groups on 3
different planes, a significant difference (p<.05) has been found on HS-SOT 5.
There was no significant difference between the scores of the two groups in SOT and
HS-SOT 2 on three planes (p>.05). No significant difference has been found for HSSOT
2 on any plane (p>.05). When the sensitivity and specificity ratios are
examined, the most specific condition was in the pitch plane (100%) followed by in
the yaw (%95) and roll plane (%95) has been found for HS-SOT 5. It has been
concluded that head movements are an important parameter for the evaluation of
Computerized Dynamic Posturography and head shake modification can be used
efficiently on individuals suffering dizziness.
