TOPRAK, Cemil. The Vague İmage of Violence, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2019.
The concept of violence has been a subject for art in every age of history. The conceptualization of violence through works of art, and how the expression of violence varies across changing paradigms through history, is an important point that needs to be emphasized. Especially the 19th century appears as an intellectual breaking point in this aspect. Art which under the influence of religious and political institutions was a support to the forces of power, became an area in which the concept violence was handled from a critical point of view after this century. From the 19th century onward, art became a point of resistance against violence.
The concept of violence, what constitutes as violence and the limits of the definition of this concept is a complete area of study in its own right. Today, the concept of violence both includes a wide range of use and the definition of this concept varies among different cultures and societies. On the other hand, the varying and evolving forms of power structures has divided the concept of violence into varied sub layers. Among these layers violence has the tendency to become invisible, or normalised.
Acts of violence become vague as they are repeated and the public becomes inured to them. This yields to violence appearing as a cultural motif at times. In this thesis, we aim to handle encounters with the more obscure forms of violence and the unease brought on by these encounters.
