Ünsal, Hazal. New Forms of Expression in Art in the Context of Ethnographic Culture.
Graduate Art Study Report, Ankara, 2018
In this report titled as “New Forms of Expression in Art in the Context of Ethnographic
Culture”, approach to the folkloric object with today’s cyclical structure and art practises
is studied. In the light of Benjamin’s “A work of art has always been reproducible. Manmade
artefacts could always be imitated by men.” (Benjamin, 2008, p.52) statement,
readdressing every object and art has been possible with the facilities of today and the
age it belongs to. Also, throughout the history of art from Duchamp’s Mona Lisa example
to Andy Warhol’s Brillo Box, readdressing of daily objects and art is observed.
In the first part of the report, the concept of culture is investigated thoroughly and its
definitions are made. Through culture, cultural object and through cultural object, the
concept of belonging and the identities attributed to the objects are investigated and
contextualized. The bond between culture and the cultural object. An object that exists as
a cultural object contains references to the period it is created.
Investigating the materials in order to understand the primitive is an indicator of the
importance of the object in human life an in addion to an abstract concept like culture,
cultural object has been an equivalent of the signifiers. Examination of the past and
present ways of life increases its importance in today’s social elements. That is the reason
of the increasing significance of ethnography and ethnology. In the context of
ethnographic object as an important component of Anatolia or even more specifically in
the context of folkloric object, lace has a language that is conveyed through symbols and
through this language the individual is expressed often in the field where the individual
cannot speak. Point laces that are attributed to Anatolian women have been a way of selfexpression
for women for years.

The “things” that are created by people and parts of the definition of culture are classified
through their historicity. The richness of Anatolian geography in this subject is
incontestable. Ethnography which is encountered as a concrete image of culture is in a
place that touches the human life both in artistic and social perspectives. Cultural object
(this object can be named as ethnographic object or folkloric object too) which is a
concrete signifier of ethnography and culture can be readdressed in the context of new
ways of expression with the tendencies of today’s age. As one of the most important
factors of cultural evolution technology or technological improvement without doubt has
influenced the field of art directly.
In the second part of the report, the place of folkloric objects in the field of art and the
everyday life is researched. Readdressing of the cultural object is possible not only
through technology but also through today’s daily usage practises. Readdressing of
objects is related with their cyclical positions in addition to their historicity. The area of
usage of an object that is passed on to the future depends on the dream of the inheritor in
addition to the dream of the legator. The answers to the questions “in what context these
objects are used today?” and “where do these objects stand as a way of expression?” are
sought in the basis of artists and practises.
