This study aimed to investigate the reasons for readmission to the emergency department within the first 3 months (90 days) after discharge in patients hospitalized and discharged with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke, the factors associated with these readmissions, and the prognoses of the patients. The study included 1454 patients who were admitted to the Adult Emergency Department of Hacettepe University Hospital between January 1, 2016, and October 1, 2022, hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke, and discharged. 22.9% of the patients (n=333) returned to the emergency department within 90 days. The average age of the readmitted patients was 67.3 years (±14.6), and 54.5% were male. The most common reasons for readmission were determined as stroke progression (23.8%), pneumonia (20.6%), and urinary tract infections (19.2%). The readmission rate was found to be significantly higher in patients with a history of cerebrovascular disease, dementia, chronic kidney disease, and epilepsy (p<0.01). Readmission rates were found to be significantly higher in patients diagnosed with pneumonia, stroke progression, renal dysfunction, and delirium during hospitalization (p<0.05).
In conclusion, readmissions to the emergency department in the post-stroke period are a significant problem. Especially infections, comorbid diseases, and stroke progression play important roles in these readmissions.
