ABSTRACT
Bolat M. Evaluation of Perioperative Experiences of Patients Undergoing Awake Craniotomy, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Specialization Thesis, Ankara, 2024.
Awake craniotomy can be defined as an intracranial open surgical procedure where the patient remains fully awake during all or part of the surgery. It has become the gold standard surgical approach for the resection of low-grade gliomas. Patient experiences are crucial for improving the awake craniotomy technique and enhancing patient care services.
We analyzed data from 60 patients who underwent awake craniotomy at our hospital between January 2019 and September 2023. The study used a retrospective and observational approach. Demographic information, perioperative experiences, overall satisfaction levels, and suggestions were collected through surveys and retrospective reviews.
The study revealed that the majority of patients were satisfied with communication with the surgical team (93.3%) and received sufficient information about anesthesia and the operation (98.3%), although they found the written informational materials to be inadequate (21.7%).
The results emphasize the importance of a patient-centered approach in pre- and postoperative processes, highlighting that more comprehensive informational and support systems can improve the patient experience. Furthermore, it was concluded that awake craniotomy can be successfully conducted when the surgical team works in multidisciplinary harmony and ensures that patients feel secure throughout the procedure. However, areas for improvement were identified, such as the inadequacy of written informational materials and the discomfort associated with local anesthetic injections.
This study provides patient-centered data on awake craniotomy practices in Turkey, contributing significantly to the literature. Standardized practices and optimized processes are essential for enhancing patient satisfaction.
