Abstract

Typography continues to change and develop day by day with computer technologies. Typography produces various and original results in different design disciplines. In this thesis, kinetic typography is analysed in the context of abstract art.

The expression of emotions and thoughts that the abstract concept deals with in order to reach the concrete again and to get to the essence of the idea has a common expression language with kinetic typography. Expressing the desired concept in its simplest form is an important method at the point of effective expression. In this direction, the meeting of abstract art with kinetic typography offers new ways of expression to the designer. It can be said that the use of kinetic typography and abstract art together, which has an effective design language in the transfer of emotion and thought, is important as an innovative approach in the field of graphic design. In the designs created in this direction, the effective dimension created by the use of abstract art should be included in the design process. Kinetic typography video produced in the context of abstract art can give the audience an artistic perspective. However, the examination of this subject is important in terms of contributing to the deficiencies in the literature.

In the first chapter of this thesis titled “Kinetic Typography In The Context Of Abstract Art And A Design Suggestion” kinetic typography and typography are discussed. The historical development of typography and kinetic typography, the conceptual dimension and usage areas of typography, new typography, kinetic typography in generic design, digital typography and motion graphics period were investigated.

In the second part, abstract art, abstraction and the story of art, abstraction and examples in graphic design, and abstract art and examples in the field of kinetic typography are emphasised.

In the third part of the study, important examples from festival title sequences are analysed in terms of kinetic typography in the context of abstract art.

In the last part, the application example, designs were made for a short film festival trailer by using abstract art and kinetic typography together. At this point, a short film festival was designed and a trailer and corporate identity were designed for this event. A trailer was designed for the festival named ‘SnapShot Short Film Festival’ at 1 minute 10 seconds and 15 second teaser videos for five different speakers. In this application example, it is explained which techniques are used, according to which the elements are selected and what they mean in design.
