Özet
This study examines the opinions of independent digital game developers regarding the inclusion of the social responsibility dimension in the game development process. In this context, the aim of the study is to reveal the primary motivations of game developers, who are at the core of the digital game production process, when creating digital games and whether social responsibility is among these motivations. Thus, the study seeks to determine whether digital games, which actively reach individuals from all walks of life in daily life, contribute to society within the scope of social responsibility and whether such a contribution is necessary, based on the perspectives of independent digital game developers.
Designed as a case study, this research was conducted using a qualitative approach. A total of 20 independent game developers participated in the study: 10 who had received training at the Application and Game Academy and 10 who had not undergone such training. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis using the MAXQDA 24 qualitative analysis software.
The research findings indicate that participants' perspectives on the inclusion of social responsibility and societal contribution in the game development process varied. While the majority of participants viewed the integration of social responsibility and societal contribution into game development positively, some argued that it was unnecessary. Similarly, differing opinions were observed regarding the regulation of digital games. Some participants believed that regulation in game development processes could be beneficial, while others opposed it. Those who argued against regulation claimed that it could hinder the development of new ideas in the creative activity of game development. As a result of the study, although not all independent game developers shared the same view, a significant portion believed that considering social responsibility in the digital game development process could contribute positively to society.
