This study examines the subject of mythology in the written literature of the Republican period from a functional perspective. In the introduction, the significance of studying written culture within folklore research is emphasized. The first chapter defines the key concepts that form the foundation of the thesis. The second chapter explores the interaction between oral and written culture within the framework of historical, cultural, and technological changes. It provides general information on the characteristics of oral and written cultural environments, their interactions, the relationship between narrative and narrator, the invention of writing, and the printing press. The third chapter is divided into three sub-sections: “Early Period (1923-1938)”, “Middle Period (1939-1980)” and “Late Period (1980-…)”. Each period is analyzed through selected literary works of certain authors. The study includes works by Kemalettin Şükrü Orbay, Peyami Safa, İskender Fahrettin Sertelli, Yaşar Kemal, Fakir Baykurt, Hüseyin Nihal Atsız, Latife Tekin, Buket Uzuner, and İhsan Oktay Anar. The analyses take into account the political, social, and cultural transformations of the periods in which these works were written. Adopting a chronological approach, the study presents perspectives on the reasons for mythological tendencies in each period. Additionally, the cultural policies of the period and specific cultural institutions are incorporated into the study. The conclusion reveals that the use of mythology in the written literature of the Republican period varies according to the characteristics of each era and serves different functions in each period.
