The aim of this study was to understand the physiological basis
of cognitive performance by examining differences in Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
during Go game problems between high and low level Go players. The research add-
ressed HRV parameters of 27 male participants (14 high-level, 13 low-level) measured
at rest and during problem solving. Data were recorded with a Polar H10 heart rate
monitor and analysed with Kubios HRV Scientific software. Descriptive statistics of
the data were obtained using the R programme. The conformity of the data to normal
distribution was evaluated by Shapiro-Wilk test. For normally distributed data, the dif-
ferences between the groups were analysed by independent t-test, and the differences
between pre-test and post-test were analysed by paired t-test. Mann-Whitney U test
was used for non-normally distributed data. The significance level was set as 0.05 in
all statistical tests. The results showed that there was no significant difference between
high and low level players in terms of HRV values during rest and problem solving.
This finding suggests that the level of expertise in the game of Go does not show a
significant relationship with HRV.
