Abstract

In this study, what Averroes, whose distinction of intellect has been controversial in the medieval Latin world, says about the material intellect and the faculty of imagination will be investigated within the scope of Jean-Baptiste Brenet's claim that this faculty of imagination shapes thinking. In order to investigate this claim, we will first examine the source of Averroes'; text, Aristotle's On the Soul (Peri Psukhes), which is actually a commentary on Averroes'; distinction of intellect. Since it is thought that what makes Aristotle different in the study of the nous is to depart from his predecessors, especially his teacher Plato, our research will begin with Plato.
