Exhibition design is a multidisciplinary (disciplinary) field that expresses the processes of creating interesting environments carried out in line with the necessity of presenting works of art, products and/or information to the targeted audience, and the related applications of these processes. This discipline includes fields such as architecture, graphic design, lighting design, interior design, and also includes multimedia design with the necessary software. The exhibition design aims to provide an informative and sensory experience with its functionality, beyond just creating a visually striking and original design.
In current exhibition designs, thanks to the integration of new technologies, visitors are presented with information that is different from the usual flow of daily life, thus encouraging them to think in multiple ways. In exhibition design, especially multimedia elements and technologies are increasingly used in order to create remarkable, interesting and immersive experience environments for visitors. Applications such as audio, video, interactive images, projection devices and virtual reality are among the elements commonly used in this context.
In this thesis study, multimedia technologies used in exhibition design were researched and examined using descriptive approaches in the context of qualitative research methods. Additionally, samples were collected by field research method and interviews were conducted. The thesis consists of four chapters.
In the first chapter, exhibition design is discussed in the context of visitor-space-object. In the first part of the thesis, the focus is on the exhibition object, visitor, space, and space-object relationship within the framework of exhibition design, and in the second part, within the framework of multimedia technologies used in exhibition design; Sensory use and display techniques are explained with examples. In the third section titled Examining the use of multimedia technologies in exhibition design, case studies were carried out and interviews were conducted with the designers of the examined exhibitions. In the fourth chapter, presented as an application study; The exhibition design created using multimedia technologies for the Erimtan Archeology and Art Museum is examined and presented.
In this research, it can be stated that the use of multimedia technologies in exhibition design can strengthen social interaction by providing public visibility experiences to visitors. In this context, although an increase in the interaction and number of visits in exhibition areas such as museums, galleries and historical places is expected, it has been observed that the relevant situation is an issue that continues to be researched.
