Özet
Since Gutenberg, the field of visual communication and graphic design has been deeply tied to technical and technological advances. Every developing and changing technology has contributed to communication design, and the new opportunities it has brought or provided have caused the design understanding of all graphic design and visual communication to change, starting with books. Every new technique or technology that has emerged has not always had an immediate or immediate effect, and has found its reward in practice as its possibilities and contribution to production have been understood over time. Variable fonts are actually not a new technology as one might think. However, the development and effective use of these old technologies can be considered new since it was 2017. Therefore, this topic/problem can be considered as a new research area. Because within the scope of this title, there are not enough Turkish resources in our country yet. With this thesis, it is aimed to deal with the history of variable fonts, to reveal their general features, to examine the visual communication works of designers with variable fonts, and to create a comprehensive Turkish resource.
In Chapter 1 of the thesis, terminology/conceptual explanations and a terminology about variable font are included. In Chapter 2, research data on the comprehensive development process of visual communication design, the importance of typographic design in visual communication, the development of digital font technology, and the present and future of variable font are included. In Chapter 3, the place and importance of digital font in visual communication design, the contribution of variable font technology to visual communication design, and the examination and evaluation of selected designs with variable fonts are explained. In the Last Chapter, there are drafts and suggestions about the application work, the possibilities of using the works and design studies made with variable fonts.
