Abstract

Periods of social and societal crisis and the forms of governance of these periods directly affect art, the production of artists, and the representation of the body as an object. One aspect of the embodiment of the body's interaction with the social structure is its relationship with power. In this research titled "Extraordinary Crisis and the Body," the effects of crisis periods on the body and art are analyzed through the state of emergency practices and examples from art history. The impact of crises on human life has created significant changes on body representations and artistic attitudes. Artistic productions realized in times of crisis are essential elements that reflect the spirit of the period and the artist's point of view. While crisis periods lead to significant changes in human life, body representation, and art movements, the attitudes of artists in these processes and how they handle crises are critical. In the process of writing this thesis, the effects of crises on the body and society in today's world, which is dominated by pandemics, the economy, and various power crises, will be analyzed with references from similar situations in the past. By evaluating the reflections and effects of extraordinary crises on the body in the triangle of media, power, and body, it is aimed to search for the role of the artist in the crisis environment with the analysis of artworks from the past and present.
