This study was conducted to examine the balance performance of competitive handball players playing in university teams and to compare it with the balance performance data of sedentary individuals. For this purpose, 18 competitive handball players (9 females and 9 males) and 18 sedentary individuals (9 females and 9 males) between the ages of 18-30 years were included in the study. Balance performance was interpreted by the center of pressure (COP) displacement signals obtained from the quiet stance balance test measurements performed three times for each condition for 30 seconds under eyes open and eyes closed conditions on a balance pad added on top of the force platform to create a deformable surface. COP displacement signals in the anterior-posterior (AP) and medio-lateral (ML) directions and COP Range - AP, COP Range - ML, COP Standard Deviation, COP Ellipse Area and COP Mean Velocity metrics were calculated. The balance performance of sedentary individuals was obtained by reading the physical characteristic information and COP signals of 163 participants, which were presented as a publicly available dataset published by Santos and Duarte in 2016, with the Python programming language, filtered and analyzed with the specified criteria. The balance performance metrics of competitive handball players and sedentary individuals under eyes open and eyes closed conditions were analyzed by repeated measures two-factor analysis of variance (group, vision) and post hoc tests. A significance threshold of 0.05 was set for all statistical tests. When the findings were analyzed, the effect of the main factor of vision on balance performance was statistically significant (p<0.05). On the other hand, the effect of group main factor on balance performance was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The balance performance of both groups in the eyes open condition was higher than in the eyes closed condition at a high effect size level. There was no statistically significant difference between the balance performance of competitive handball players and sedentary individuals in the eyes closed condition (p>0.05). In the eyes open condition, there was a statistically significant difference between competitive handball players and sedentary individuals only in the COP Mean Velocity metric (p<0.001). The COP Mean Speed value of competitive handball players (1.863 cm/s) was smaller than that of sedentary individuals (2.435 cm/s). This may be interpreted as competitive handball players require less neuromuscular activity to maintain the same level of postural stability as sedentary individuals in the eyes open condition.
