Investigation of Previous Trauma Histories, Attachment Characteristics, Mentalizing Abilities and Emotional Availability of Parents in Adolescents and Their Mothers Applied to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Thesis in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Ankara, 2023. This study is a cross-sectional study in which adolescents with any psychiatric disorder and their mothers were compared with adolescents without any psychiatric disorder and their mothers in terms of childhood traumas, attachment characteristics, mentalizing abilities, emotional availability of parents, and the relationship between these factors in adolescents and their mothers. Additionally, the mediating roles of adolescents' attachment characteristics, mentalizing abilities and psychological resilience in the relation of adolescents' childhood traumas and psychiatric symptoms, and the mediating roles of mothers' attachment characteristics, mentalizing abilities and emotional availability in the relation of mothers' childhood traumas and adolescents' psychiatric symptoms was evaluated. A total of 165 adolescents between aged 12-18 years, including 100 adolescents with any psychiatric disorder and 65 healthy adolescents without any psychiatric disorder and their mothers were enrolled in the study. Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children- Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) was used to determine psychiatric diagnosis in research group and to exclude psychiatric diagnosis in healthy control group. The adolescents who participating in the study filled in Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Adolescent Relationship Scales Questionnaire (A-RSQ), Reflective Functioning Questionnaire-Youth (RFQ-Y), Lum Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP), Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-12) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). The mothers of the adolescents who participating in the study filled in Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ), Reflective Functioning Questionnaire-Short Version (RFQ-SV), Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ). As a result, it was found that adolescents with any psychiatric disorder had more childhood traumas including emotional neglect, physical neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse, fearful and preoccupied attachment characteristics, had less secure attachment characteristics, mentalizing abilities and psychological resilience compared to healthy controls. It was found that the mothers of adolescents with any psychiatric disorder had more childhood traumas, preoccupied attachment characteristics, pre-mentalizing difficulties and higher levels of uncertainty about mental states, and these mothers had lower emotional availability compared to the control group. When the whole sample was evaluated, childhood traumas in adolescents were observed to be correlated with secure-insecure attachment characteristics, mentalizing abilities, levels of psychological resilience, psychiatric symptoms, and also with childhood traumas of mothers. Childhood traumas and preoccupied attachment characteristics of adolescents were determined as the variables that most significantly affects their psychiatric symptoms. It was found that the relation between adolescents' childhood traumas and psychiatric symptoms was mediated by adolescents' secure and preoccupied attachment characteristics and psychological resilience, and also the relation between mothers' childhood traumas and adolescents' psychiatric symptoms was mediated by mothers' pre-mentalizing difficulties and emotional availability.
