Death, is an inevitable event for the individuals in the sociocultural life of a society. Death, is the last step of all the other periods of life which starts with birth. Death, mostly avoided to be spoken on deeply, is accepted to be the start of the end in some societies, while the end of the the start in others.
In our research, we examined burial traditions, choice of the kind of the tombs, burial rituals and effect of these customs on the beliefs of the Korean people. In the following section, we studied some topics related to the social status of the society and the kinds of tombs, according to the kronological order in history. We found out several tombs and other discoveries. Later we examined traditional burial rituals in Korean culture. Lastly we learned that the society got influenced strongly by the Chinese culture on the subject of death.
Another aspect of our study is the alikeness between Goguryeo and Göktürk tombs. Especially, the tombs in Goguryeo Kingdom period is very much like that of Kül Tigin tomb during period of Göktürks. Goguryeo, was the Kingdom ruling in the Mancurya area, now under the Chinese sovernity. It was, then, the Göktürk period in Turkish history. That’s why, a more detailed research could bring out a stronger traditional relationship between the Korean and Turkish people.
The research aims to introduce the Korean culture acting on the beliefs of the society related to the event of death and burial traditions. Studies on folk culture can be used to enlighten the ancient characteristics of the old societies. I hope, this research will be a helpful guide for the later studies on the subject.
Anyway, this study covers the period till the end of Josean time (?- 1910) in Korean history.
