The topic of the thesis is the architecture of the Eastern and Western Villas in the
Ancient City of Arykanda, within the borders of the Village called ''Arif'' in Antalya
Province, Finike District.
In the thesis, these two villa structures belonging to the city were described
particularly in terms of their architectural features, their phases were defined and
dating recommendations were made in the light of archaeological data.
The West villa is located in between the area of West entrance of the City and
the terrace houses of traditional architecture of arykanda located south of the
West cliff of the City starting from the bottom of the trade agora and bouleterion
continuing to the south by forming terraces. It is understood that this structure,
differs from the traditional architecture of the City, was built by planning in terms
of both material and plan. According to its relations of spaces, mosaic ornemants
and plan form the building shows most of the features of roman imperial period
residental architecture with atrium
The East Villa is connected to the West Villa by a pathway in the west, and to the
city in the east by the road coming from the west of the Sebasteion structure. The
resemblance to the houses formed by cutting the bedrock in the city and the coins
found belong to the early two periods indicate that the building belongs to the
hellenistic period. The building was re-planned around a courtyard and converted
into a residence with atrium With the influence of the West villa and the population
increase caused by the roman period.
Residential architecture with atrium in Anatolia and Lycia region was examined
and included in the study. In this context, the plan and functional change of the
atrium house architecture and the regional changes in the buildings were
compared and the Romanization process of the Arykanda City was discussed
over these two houses.
