Abstract

Primary school education structures are the places where children spend most of their time after their homes and get acquainted with public life. In current education approaches, the concept of learning has been determined as the focus by moving away from the concept of teaching. It can be accepted that the classrooms, which are at the center of learning in educational structures, require a change in the currently used arrangement according to current education approaches. In this study, it is aimed to question how learning places in primary schools have changed and how they should be shaped according to current approaches. By emphasizing the value and importance of primary school in children's learning, the scope of the study was limited to primary school classrooms. Determining the spatial needs of learning spaces in primary school buildings constitutes the scope of the study. Within the scope of the study, what should be present in the learning space and how the needs can change according to current education approaches were investigated by taking the opinions of the teachers on the spatial characteristics, arrangements and requirements in the classrooms. In this study, which was planned as a qualitative research, it was aimed to collect data with semi-structured in-depth interviews and a study group was determined rather than the sample group. With this aim, participants in the study group were determined with the snowball method among the primary school classroom teachers who took part in the Future Classroom Lab project carried out at the international level by the Ministry of National Education on the planning of the future classrooms. Online interviews were conducted with fourteen designated classroom teachers. The data obtained from the answers given as a result of the interviews were subjected to content analysis. By examining the concepts of flexibility, furniture-equipment, lighting, color, ventilation, temperature, noise, aesthetics, educational equipment and security, it was concluded that learning spaces should be designed in accordance with current education approaches. Guided by the information obtained from the literature review and analysis, recommendations were made for the design of learning spaces in accordance with current educational approaches.
