Abstract

This study comprises the historical novels about the foundation process of the Ottoman Empire, hence the period called Osman Gazi's life span. The aim of the thesis is to determine the relevance of the novels based on the founding period of the Ottoman Empire with historical data. For this determination, controversial events, people and times that can be found in every novel, whose historical reality can be reached, and which have conflicts between sources and novels, were selected. The novels within the scope of the thesis have been handled with the elements of the novel structure and analyzed on the basis of historical reality, in the relationship between reality and fiction. Events, people and times that are considered to be important and contradictory in the novels discussed have been interpreted with the combination of historical researches and novel data. The similarity and differences between the data in historical sources related to events, people and times that are considered important and contradictory in the novels have been examined. The effect of these partnerships and differences on the novels has been analyzed. It has been discussed that historical novels create a fictional world by sticking to reality and the effects of this fictional world on the relationship between history and literature. It has been determined that the general purpose of the novels in our study is teaching. It has been seen that all of the novels have fictionalized the historical realities after selecting them for pragmatist purposes. It has been suggested that these novels do not serve their purpose due to their fictions that diverge from historical data. It has been determined that the contradictions and incompatibilities between the examined historical sources affect the novels, and the conflicts between the historical novels are reflected in parallel to them. During this study, some help was received from literature, history and philosophy science data and methods.
