In the report of the artwork titled “Modular Ceramic Sun Shades Created for the Architecture-Ceramic Relationship,” the concept of shadow was primarily focused on. The development of shadow in art history has been examined in terms of different periods and art disciplines, and examples of the use of shadow in different fields in today's contemporary art have been analysed. Then, the importance of the use of daylight in architecture for building design and the decisive role of the light-shadow relationship in the perception of space are mentioned. It has been explained how changes in the sun's route and angle affect daylight and therefore buildings, and the contribution of common skylight and direct sunlight to comfort if they are included in the design with the right control. Calculation methods that can be used while designing a sunshade are explained. Shade elements that can be used in the building envelope are exemplified and sunshades are classified. After the classification made, qualified sunshade examples that have been applied in the world in the field of architecture have been examined. These examples were examined in terms of movement and material diversity, and ceramic sunshades were researched.
In the second part, original ceramic sunshade application suggestions, which were designed within the scope of this study and formed from modular units, are included. The starting points of the designs, the feelings and thoughts to be conveyed, the conceptual infrastructure and the production stages of the units are explained in this section. Evaluation of all the data obtained as a result of the previous section and the implementations and a general evaluation of ceramic sunshades in terms of economic and artistic aspects were made.
