People, when looked from afar, can be clustered in several similar denominators such as their weights, heights, postures or clothes, but the most effective way to distinguish them from each other is their faces. Sudden changes; irritability, excitability, fear etc. are mostly expressed and perceived on the face and it is the part where a person's characteristics are the most significant and the most intense. The representation of the face in art is the portrait / self-portrait. The purpose of this report is to study the section of the art history where portrait / self-portrait concept occupy, in the context of the artist‟s motive of communicating to the viewer his/hers self-expression to via plastic arts. In the first section under the scope of this review, portrait / self-portrait will be researched in context of conceptual and historical course from the oldest archeological samples until 19th century and implications will be made according periodic properties.
