Sand flies, known as Bartonellosis and sand fly fever vectors are also the only known vectors of Leishmaniasis, one of the most important protozoan diseases that threaten human and animal health. In the Mediterranean Basin, including Turkey, Phlebotomus tobbi Adler, Theodor & Lourie, 1930, the proven vector of Leishmania infantum, Nicolle, 1908, has a wide distribution area in Turkey. In this study, life tables were prepared for adult P. tobbi individuals that were exposed to different constant temperature conditions. The effects of these temperature conditions on pre-adult periods were also investigated.
Adult longevity, intrinsic rate of increase, net reproduction rate and generation time were estimated for P. tobbi cohorts grown under laboratory conditions at constant temperatures of 18 °C, 23 °C and 27 °C. Species-specific developmental zero and thermal constant values were determined for each immature stage. As a result of the increase in temperature, intrinsic rate of increase and net reproduction rate values increased, while generation time and adult longevity were shortened. Developmental zero values for egg, larvae and pupae were calculated as 20.29 °C (39.34 Degree-Days), 10.58 °C (454.40 Degree-Days) and 18.05 °C (77.49 Degree-Days) respectively, while the minimum temperature required to complete a generation was estimated as 16.35 °C (641.51 Degree-Days).
In this study, life table parameters, species-specific thermal constant and developmental zero values for P. tobbi were revealed for the first time. These data would contribute to the studies related to P. tobbi biology and would be helpful for vector control efforts and epidemiological investigations especially in regions where sand fly borne diseases are endemic.
