This study was designed as a randomized controlled study to investigate the effect of peer interactive group support to adolescents with celiac disease in the 13-18 age group on quality of life, peer relationships and coping levels of adolescents. The study was conducted with 36 adolescents who were followed in a university hospital and had celiac disease and met the inclusion criteria. Adolescents who accepted to participate in the study were randomly included in the research and control groups by lot method. The data of the study were collected between June 22, 2018 and October 06, 2018 by using the introductory information form for adolescents and family, Quality of Life Scale for Children (PedsQL), Peer Relationship Scale, and Coping Scale for Adolescents (KIDCOPE). Six sessions were conducted with the adolescents (n = 18) in the study group. The six peer interactive group sessions were held one week apart and each session lasted approximately 1.5 hours. During the sessions, the participants were asked questions about the problems they face in their home, school and social life by the researcher and the adolescents were allowed to discuss with each other and offer solutions. Adolescents in the control group (n = 18) were not given any training or counseling. Total scores of the quality of life scale of adolescents in the study group were statistically significantly higher than the control group (Z = -4.734; p <0.001), the total scores of the peer relations scale were statistically significantly higher than the control group (t = 6.837; p < 0.001) The coping scale of the research group itself, the active coping sub-dimension posttest scores, statistically significantly higher than the pre-test scores (t = -2,712; p = 0.015), coping sub-dimension posttest scores avoiding the coping scale is statistically significantly higher than pretest scores. (t = -2.487; p = 0.024). The coping scale of the adolescents in the study group, the negative coping sub-dimension post-test scores were statistically significantly lower than the control group. (Z = -2,660; p = 0,008). As a result; In this study, involving peer interactive group support intervention in adolescents with celiac disease, the intervention regarding the use of the strategy to increase the quality of life in adolescents, positive developments in peer relationships, active coping and avoiding coping strategy and negative coping strategy were effective. Establishing peer support groups under the leadership of a nurse for Celiac Patients will be effective in coping with the disease, improving the quality of life and reducing social isolation.
