Bozdemir Özel, Cemile, Effects of Different High Intensity Interval Training Protocols on Cardiorespiratory Parameters in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes, Hacettepe University, Graduate School Health Sciences Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Doctor of Philosophy Thesis, Ankara, 2020. HIIT is an exercise approach used in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different HIIT protocols on glucose concentration and cardiorespiratory parameters in T2DM. Thirty individuals with T2DM were included in the study. The individuals were divided into two groups. The first group was trained with short intervals HIIT protocol (SI-HIIT) (30 s x 4, Workload 100 %), the second group was applied long intervals HIIT protocol (LI-HIIT) (4 min x 4, Workload 85 %). Before and after exercise training, laboratory and anthropometric values of the subjects were recorded. Body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis, pulmonary function using pulmonary function test, respiratory muscle strength using mouth pressure device, functional capacity using six-minute walk test (6MWT), maximal exercise capacity using incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) and maximal cycle exercise test, physical activity levels with accelerometer, quality of life using Diabetes Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire were assessed. Muscle oxygenation during exercise was recorded using portable near infrared spectroscopy device. At the end of the training, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, BMI, body weight, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio and fat percentage decreased in both groups when compared with baseline values (p<0.05). FEV1, FVC (L), FVC (%), MIP %, MIP, MEP %, MEP, AHMYT %, AHMYT, peak cycling workload, cycling MET value, daily number of steps and muscle oxygenation increased (p<0.05). 6DYT distance and 6DYT % were higher in the second group. There was no difference in other parameters between the two groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, SI-HIIT protocol and LI-HIIT protocol showed similar effects on individuals with T2DM. SI-HIIT protocol may be preferred in individuals with time problems due to similar effects.
