Akdeniz Bitkilerinin Yangın Sonrası Çimlenme Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi
Abstract
Fire has become a phenomenon that shape ecosystems around the world since the emergence of terrestrial plants. In Mediterranean ecosystems where natural and human-induced fires frequently occur, dominant vegetation types consist of the plant species that are managed to survive in these conditions. Some of these species have the adaptation of post-fire stimulation of germination, and they are able to reappear in high densities in the burned areas by germinating immediately after fire. To know the fire-related germination properties of these species is of importance not only to lead the post-fire management practices, but also to conserve the rare and endemic plant species in these areas. In this study, seeds of several species from Mediterranean vegetation were collected from the coastal provinces of Turkey from İzmir to Antalya. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to test whether high temperatures and smoke appearing during a fire increase the germination percentages.
