Konya/İkonion ve Çevresinde Bulunan Bizans Dönemi Taş Eserleri
Özet
As a significant settlement through the whole entire of Classical Antiquity, Konya, ancient Iconion (Iconium), was the principal cityof Lycaonia in Central Asia Minor. Although the city was known as early as the 1stcentury throughout Christianity, it is unfortunate that there is little architecture left related to the Byzantine Period with the exceptions of Churches of St. Helen and St. Chariton at Sille. Iconion was the capital of 14 metropolises and the center visited by Apostle Paul during his missionary journeys throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. The only traces of Byzantine heritage in the region are the architectural spoliethatreused within the rich constructionactivities while Konya was the capital of The Seljuk Sultanateof Anatolia during the 11thcentury and thus reflecting an urban Turco-Islamic character.
