Abstract

Abstract Although Internet has become one of the indispensable media of our daily and professional life, it has also introduced several problems. These problems can be identified as the unscalable size of Internet, the insufficiency of information retrieval tools, the lack of open access to entire Internet for entire audience and frequent change of URLs or disappearence of the web pages after a period of time. Adding metadata to the Internet sources is one of the initiatives to organise this particular unclassified huge information source and to improve information discovery on the Internet. It was claimed that if the developers of search engines and the creators of web pages use the metadata, the performance of web search would be improved. This descriptive study examines metadata initiatives, standards, tools and applications, and try to promote the idea of adding metadata to the Internet sources.
