Purpose: Health expenditure has been increased and control of it has gained importance today, as a result generic drug usage has been increased. Generic antibiotics usage has been started in our hospital in the last years beause of economic causes. In clinical practice, increased incidence of neutropenia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and allergic reactions have been seen with piperacillin-tazobactam generic preparations after usage of generic antibiotics. In this study, it is planned to compare side effect profiles of generic and original piperacillin-tazobactam preparations. Study Design: Recordings of all patients who were given piperacillin-tazobactam preparations between dates 1 July 2011 and 31 December 2013 were investigated by the usage of computer system of hospital. Number of patients who developed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and neutropenia after one week from usage of piperacillin-tazobactam preapations was calculated, comparations were made by the help of one variable and multivariable analyses. Findings: When compared according to leukopenia, in the second, third and seventh days it is found statistically significant that leukopenia is seen less frequently with original preparations (p= 0.002, p<0.001 and p= 0.025). Neutropenia is seen less frequently with generic preparations when compared with original preparations (p= 0.022, p= 0.025 and p= 0.007). when compared according to thrombocytopenia, it is seen less frequently with original preparations (p<0.001, p= 0.002, p<0.001). In multivariable analysis, it has been shown that risk of thrombocytopenia in the first 7 days was increased by 1.89 folds with generic preparations (p<0.001) and leukopenia risk in the first 7 days was increased by 1.47 folds with generic preparations (p=0.004). Results: Generic preparations are being used more frequently because of economic causes nowadays. Broad spectrum studies are needed to investigate efficacy, safety and side effect profiles of generic drugs.
