Stories of the Prophets (Kiṣaṣ al-Anbiyā) written by Abū Isḥāḳ al-Thaʿlabī are one of the most popular works in the Turkish literature. It has several translations from Arabic to Turkish in different period of times. The First translation was in the 14th century whereas the last one was in the 19th century. In this thesis, three translations, from the Old Anatolian Turkish period, of the Stories of the prophet’s transcription based on the story of Joseph will be taken as the basis of the study. These translations are; The translated copy of Turkish Language Association (TDK) from the period of the Old Anatolian Turkish, known as (Kiṣaṣ al-Anbiyā) whose translator is unknown, and the translations of both Çerkezî (Sharkasi) and İznikî (Izniki) that belong to the same era.
In this study, a descriptive translation research method will be discussed in terms of the adopted strategies and the translation decisions in the translation process through comparing the above mentioned Turkish translations of Al Tha’alibi’s Arabic book named Arāʾis al-madjālis fī Kiṣaṣ al-Anbiyā (The stories of the Prophets), made in the Old Anatolian Turkish period. In the theoretical framework of the study, Georges L.Bastin's classification of linguistic-cultural elements in prose, based on certain translation methods proposed in the translation of these elements, is proposed in order to highlight the translation methods and strategies adopted in Turkish translations with consideration of Lawrence Venuti and Gideon Toury's views in the translation of historical-literary context.
In conclusion, by identifying the premise norms of the three different translations discussed, it will be determined which source text is acceptable and which source text is adequate translation and the reasons will be discussed.
