TUFEKCİ, Nurcan. Family Life and Life Satisfaction of the Syrian Women Who Have Experienced Forced Migration: The Ankara Example, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2019.
This research was planned and carried out in order to analyse the family life and life satisfaction of the Syrian women who experienced forced migration. First of all, it was determined whether there was a statistically significant difference between the family life of the women and education variable. Additionallly, the effects of socio-demographical variables (age, educational level, perceived income level in Turkey, employment status in Turkey, spouse’s employment status in Turkey, duration of stay in Turkey, knowledge of Turkish language, official marital status, official or unofficial co-wife status and feeling of security in Turkey) on life satisfaction were examined.
The sample group of the research consists of 200 women aged 18 or more who were currently or previously married, lived in Ankara and were under Temporary Protection Status or applied to ASAM Multi-Dimensional Support Centre or to ASAM Al Farah Child and Family Support Centre. This number was chosen according to the total number of the women at these centres using “Stratified Random Sampling” (55 women from ASAM Multi-Dimensional Support Centre; 145 women from ASAM Al Farah Child and Family Support Centre).
As regards to the family decision-making processes, it was concluded that meeting relatives (59.0% only women itself), meeting non-relatives (56.5% only women itself), the location and qualities of the houses (36.0% only women itself), the expenditure items (44.5% only women itself), paid employment statuses of the women (45.5% only women itself) and the household responsibilities (73.0% only women itself) were mostly decided by women.
The examination on the income sources of the families showed that social support (real and cash supports from the state, associations, municipalities and foundations) was the highest contributor (94.5%).
The research into the effect of various socio-demographical factors on the life satisfaction of women proved that age and perceived income level in Turkey had a statistically significant effect on life satisfaction (p<0.05).
The findings were discussed in the light of the literature, and suggestions were made according to the obtained results.
