Abstract

It is seen that uncannyness is evaluated in different ways throughout human history, when considering the origin of the uncanny, which Freud described as an existential anxiety resulting from the return of the repressed. Uncanny were evaluated in different ways according to the cultural structure, belief system, etc. factors of each period up to the modern era of industry, science and philosophy before the modern period uncanny, which explained through the term “other” by extraterrestrial celestial and mythological beings (gods, monsters, etc.), in the modern period with psychoanalysis started to be seen as a phenomenon (fact) belonging to the subconscious of human beings and to be reflected on art as well. In this thesis, which is carried out under the title of “Uncanny Images of Existential Anxiety”, targeted relationships between individual, society and art in historical contex of the concept of uncanny, which constitutes the origin of the the existential anxiety of the individual. In this context, from ancient civilizations to modern society, on the one hand, the mythological and religious narratives of the pre-modern period, on the other hand, the psychoanalytic theories of the modern period were studied and researched from the point of view of the visual and literary, as well as the ways they were viewed as thinkers and artists. In addition, in the history scene the ‘uncanny’ has gained the most place in the field of visual arts painting, photography and cinema arts handled in the context of linguistic integrity and detailed via giving various examples from artists and their works about topic. Besides, a series of applications were made, experienced on subject, studies in different ways, examined as formal and intellectual related to the concept of uncanny constituent the focus of this thesis.
