BARLAS, Mert. Micro-Utopian Space Applications in Contemporary Art, Proficiency in Art Art Work Report, Ankara, 2019
In today's world, it is inevitable to have an environment in which the concepts and forms change rapidly in the field of art, while all the positive and negative change and transformation occurring in every single field. The concepts of human, space, object and their interactions with each other have been transformed into structures that are frequently studied and re-defined by artists and theorists. Through this transformation process, the tendencies for space and space productions, which are the main subject of architecture, have created an environment for artists to evaluate new concepts and problems. Thereby, space has gained new meanings and images as an object of art, an area of intervention and sometimes as an element of reproduction. In these new tendencies, the concept of scale also started to become an element in which new forms and meanings are sought as another variable of art. Space, which is an architectural element with the changing meaning on the context of the scale. It, which is the decisive and distinguishing element of space, has started to find its position in the art.
In these contexts, nowadays, the scale is a phenomenon that artists frequently change and manipulate. Therefore, scaled spaces or reduced by relative scales, which we can see many samples of around the world, is encountered by the viewers. These kinds of artworks get formed under the influence of architecture, architectural models and its elements and dioramas. They have been an example for today's artistic productions both in terms of technique and context. The artists, who took sections of the spaces by reducing the scale of structures, included in the art the architectural structures (houses, apartments, urbanization etc.) together with the smaller scale artistic spaces. They have also discovered the new forms containing memories, phantasies, past, future, utopian and dystopian constructs with different subject contexts.
In this context, the main thesis of the study is to analyze the small-scale space implementations, which mainly contain home and gaming elements in, as micro-utopian space productions created by the effect of phantasy. The concept of micro-utopian space, which has been strived to be created during this study, was evaluated together with individual spaces named as "home" by individuals and domestic creations by children in games, in the context of sociology, philosophy and art examples. The theoretical readings of the artist examples were turned into practice by naming micro-utopian space applications. Another essential part of this study report is to analyze the concept of house/home as a personal, micro-utopian area and to examine the relationship and interaction of these concepts and metaphors with art products. In addition, dioramas, the significant area of influence in small-scale spatial studies, was evaluated in terms of concepts and implementations, while changing the meanings and forms until today.
