Bir Erkeklik Mekanı Olarak Kahvehaneler
Özet
Gender studies try to explain that femininity and masculinity are the result of a social construction process by focusing on the role given to women and men in the process of socialization. Masculinity studies are aimed at revealing the structures of power and hierarchy among different masculinities by examining the life of men in the private and public spaces too. As masculinity is a concept that is constructed through the struggle for power between men, to investigate the spaces that compose male homosociality will provide information about the different masculinities constructed in these spaces. Coffeehouses are at the top of the spaces that compose the male homosociality in which the image of hegemonic masculinity is exalted and male dominance is reproduced. For this reason in this study which is based on Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity, face-to-face interviews were conducted in Sincan district of Ankara with 13 men who are married, between the ages of 26 and 40, educated and have a practise of going to coffeehouses permanently in order to show that different masculinities are constructed and gender discrimination is reproduced at spatial level. With the interpretation of data generated from the field with descriptive analysis it is understood that the first coffehouse experience is a step of masculinity that is among the circumcision and enlistment and different masculinities are constructed through games and men’s chat by excluding all feminine behaviors and always host competing in the coffehouses.
