In the study, it was aimed to investigate the role of emotion regulation difficulties and interpersonal problems between perceived parental acceptance-rejection and psychological symptoms. The sample of the study consists of 580 students studying at Hacettepe University. Data were collected using Demographic Information Form, Parental Acceptance-Rejection Scale, Emotion Regulation Difficulties Scale, Interpersonal Problems Inventory and Brief Symptom Inventory.
Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between parental acceptance-rejection, emotional regulation difficulties, interpersonal problems and psychological symptoms and statistically significant relationships were detected between the study variables. According to the statistical analyzes done with demographic variables, it was found that perceived paternal rejection differed according to gender and it was higher in male participants than female participants, while perceived maternal rejection did not differ according to gender. Parental acceptance rejection, emotional regulation difficulties, interpersonal problems and psychological symptoms did not significantly differ according to where they lived for longest duration, living with family, education level of the parents and sibling rank. There was a statistically significant relationship between number of siblings and parental rejection. Scores of perceived paternal rejection and psychological symptoms differed according to perceived economic level. Serial Multiple Mediator Analyzes were performed separately for female and male participants to assess the mediating role of emotional regulation difficulties and interpersonal problems in the relationship between perceived parental rejection and psychological symptoms. According to the results, there is a mediator role of emotional regulation difficulties and interpersonal problems in the relationship between the perceived parental rejection and psychological symptoms. When indirect effects of parental acceptance-rejection on psychological symptoms were examined, all indirect effects through mediation of emotional regulation difficulties, through mediation of interpersonal problems and through serial mediation of emotional regulation difficulties and interpersonal problems were found to be statistically significant in female participants. However, in male participants, the indirect way in which the parental acceptance-rejection influences psychological symptoms through interpersonal problems was not significant. Clinical implications and limitations of the study were explained and suggestions for new studies were given.
