Abstract

YUMUŞ, M. Investigating the Impacts of Shared Reading Intervention Program During Babyhood on the Early Literacy Abilities, Language Development and Parents’ Literacy Practices. Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences Child Development and Education Program Doctor of Philosophy Thesis, Ankara, 2018. The aim of this research is to examine the effectiveness of a home-based shared-book reading intervention program in support of babies' language and early literacy development by increasing awareness and knowledge of parents having children aged between 8 to 24 months about early literacy and language development. The research was carried out by applying pre and post tests based on experimental design with the control group. The study group consisted of totally 250 parents, of whom 200 were mothers and 50 were fathers, having children aged between 8 to 24 months. A total of 20 parents, 10 of whom were in the experimental group and 10 of whom were in the control group, were included in the intervention program planned for the research. The parents in the experimental group regularly attended Sharing Reading Intervention Program ones a week during ten weeks. In the study, “Shared Book Reading Skills Assessment Scale”, developed within the context of this study, was used to measure the effects of the program on parents’ views, “Turkish Communication Behavior Development Inventory - TİGE 1” was used to assess the babies language development and “Babyhood (8-24 months) Shared Book Reading Skill Development Evaluation Form”, developed within the context of this study, was used to monitor effectiveness of the program on parents and babies early literacy skills. Mann-Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were used in the data analysis process. The study revealed that a statistically meaningful difference was achieved between experiment and control group regarding parents’ views on early literacy skills and literacy practices during shared reading. In addition, intervention program has the capacity to improve babies’ language and early literacy, with the effects being specific to the targeted skill.
