The main objective of this research is to compare past remembering and future imagination performance of schizophrenia and healthy groups whose long-term memory performances are not different from each other statistically, but executive functions.
The research was conducted with 23 healthy volunteer participants (6 female, 17 male) between 23-54 years old ( =30.09, SD =7.64), and 20 schizophrenia volunteer participants (6 female, 14 male) between 19-49 years old ( =34.55, SD =8.58). Healthy group was composed of undergraduate students in Hacettepe University and community-dwelling participants. Schizophrenia group was composed of patients recruited from Ankara University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry
Firstly, the participants participated the narrative generating task while f-NIRS data were being recorded. In this task participants were asked to tell their memories or imaging a plausible future event reletad to presented cue words. After this task was completed and verbal fluency task was conducted via computer, neuropsychological tests used as a part of the study were implemented.
Behavioral data were analyzed with 2(Group: Healthy and Schizophrenia Patients) x 3(Condition: Past Remembering Using One Cue Word, Future Imagination Using One Cue Word and Future Imagination Using Three Cue Words) Mixed ANOVA and physiological data were analyzed with 2(Group: Healthy and Schizophrenia Patients) x 3(Condition: Past Remembering Using One Cue Word, Future Imagination Using One Cue Word and Future Imagination Using Three Cue Words) x 2(Hemisphere: Left and Right) x 18(Brodmann Areas) Mixed ANOVA.
Results indicated that schizophrenia group showed poorer performance than healthy participants in terms of both remembering the past and imagining the future. Analyses of physiological data showed that oxy-hemoglobin level measured from healty participants during the task were greater than the schizophrenia patients. The oxy-hemoglobin level measured from Brodmann Area 21 and 22 during future imagination using one cue word condition were greater than the past remembering using one cue word condition only in healty patients. It was also found that left hemisphere was more dominant during the task than the right hemisphere.
