Özet
Humour is a style of discourse that breaks down language barriers, placing a different identity on language by changing and transforming it. It shows the reader the subject matter it dwells upon by using a different route. Therefore, the creation of humour involves a great deal of language incongruence and different genres of humour begotten by said incongruence appear. In this Doctoral Dissertation named Humour in Turkish Novel: From 1950 to Today, the language incongruences that we come across and the many different kinds of humour they beget when they converge are analysed. The thesis proceeds by evaluating the following novels: Murtaza (1952) by Orhan Kemal, Four Angled Triangle (1957) by Salah Birsel, The Class of Hababam (1957) by Rıfat Ilgaz, The Idle Man (1959) by Yusuf Atılgan, Zübük (1961) by Aziz Nesin, The Institute of Clock Adjustments (1961) by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Aunty Rosa (1968) by Sevgi Soysal, The Disconnected (1971) by Oğuz Atay, Uncle Halo and Two Oxen (1973) by Muzaffer İzgü, A Wedding’s Night (1979) by Adalet Ağaoğlu, Delayed Impeaching (1980) by Sulhi Dölek, The Adventures of Macellos Da Vinci(1981) by Erhan Bener, Berci Kristin Litter Stories (1984) by Latife Tekin, The Day of Darkness (1985) by Leyla Erbil, Democracy is chewing a piece of gum (1987) by Esen Yel, The Treasure Chest of Hocaefendi (1989) by Emre Kongar, Heavy Novel (1990) by Metin Kaçan, The Notes of Mr. Muannit Sahtegi (1991) by Vüsat Bener, Mustache Discourse (1995) by Tahsin Yücel, The Book of Deceit (1996) by İhsan Oktay Anar. In these novels culled from the period between 1950 and 2000, the topics of how the concept of humour has been transmitted to today, what kinds of transformations it has gone through in novels or what has been maintained within it unchanged are discussed. Consequently, even if it underwent certain transformations, not to mention it evolved by infiltrating postmodern art, humour has always existed; adding to the richness and variety of language in the modern Turkish novel.
