Abdullah Ziya Kozanoğlu'nun Romanlarında Milliyetçilik, Militarizm ve Toplumsal Cinsiyet
Özet
This thesis analyzes Abdullah Ziya Kozanoğlu's historical novels through the concepts of nationalism, gender and militarism. The primary sources of the thesis are the historical novels written by Abdullah Ziya Kozanoğlu. Based on a discourse analysis of Kozanoğlu's novels, one can argue that nationalism, gender and militarism are the common themes in his novels. To draw the conceptual and theoretical framework of the thesis, the first chapter surveys the feminist critique of nationalism theories and the relationship between nationalism and militarism. In this chapter, it is observed that common theories of nationalism do not sufficiently address the phenomenon of gender and it is also revealed how militarism and nationalism affect each other. The second chapter goes into an analysis of the relationship between nationalism and literature. In this framework, the place and importance of historical novels in national and gendered identity construction projects will be revealed through historical novels in Turkey. Based on this historical and conceptual framework, the third and final chapter turns to Abdullah Kozanoğlu’s novels. As Kozanoğlu claims to identify their history and heroes to young people through his historical novels, it is traced how Kozanoğlu would like to achive this goal. In this sense, this thesis argues that the most common patterns he uses in his historical novels are gender roles and maverick heroes.
