Effective teamwork and collaboration have been shown to enhance the quality of care delivery, thereby positively impacting patient outcomes. In healthcare, communication issues are widely recognized as one of the leading causes of medical errors. This study was designed to deliver the communication module of the TeamSTEPPS® program to the healthcare professionals, including residents, nurses, and technicians working in the operating room of the Ophthalmology Unit at Hacettepe University Adult Hospital, with the aim of enhancing teamwork and patient safety, while assessing the perceptions, experiences, and opinions regarding communication and teamwork. The research was conducted using a mixed-methods design, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. It took place in the Ophthalmology Unit of Hacettepe University Adult Hospital in Ankara, Turkey, between December 2022 and January 2023, with the participation of 31 individuals. The scores of the Teamwork Perception Questionnaire administered immediately before, immediately after, and one month after the TeamSTEPPS® training were compared in terms of pre-test, post-test, and post-test, retention test. No statistically significant differences were found between these comparisons (p>005). During the qualitative analysis phase, focus group interviews were conducted both before and after the TeamSTEPPS® training. The coding process, based on content analysis, identified the main themes in the interviews conducted before the training as teamwork, support, leadership skills, and communication. In responses collected after the TeamSTEPPS® training, participants reported increased awareness regarding the use of abbreviations, patient and material handovers, closed-loop communication, and the importance of timely, verbal, and face-to-face communication.
