Özet
Deviations in image, through an innovative approach, aim to move beyond the pursuit of perfection in realistic aesthetics, emphasizing the value of human creation and the beauty of imperfection. This perspective prompts a reevaluation of the meaning of art. With the invention of the camera, followed by cinema and television, humanity has become immersed in a visual-auditory world. Artists blend the technological advancements of their era with their own expertise, infusing their unique interpretations into their art.
In contemporary discourse, deviations in imagery are often referred to as “Glitches.” The term glitch conveys meanings such as slip, error, break, or distortion and is commonly used to describe software malfunctions in electronic media, which manifest as distorted visuals on the screen. These errors can appear as visual or auditory anomalies in images or videos. While the term Glitch focuses on modern digital disruptions, earlier visual deviations are excluded from its scope. Similarly, the term deformation primarily describes the physical structure of an image rather than its conceptual implications. Given the broader significance of deviations, the thesis title has been chosen as “Deviations in Image.”
This research utilizes a literature review to explore how deviations are reflected in visual artworks, analyzing these reflections through art-based practices. The selected works are examined using a visual analysis technique, which evaluates their subject, form, content, and essence. The analysis is conducted within a conceptual framework centered on the notion of deviation, and semiotic methods are employed to determine how these works contribute to artistic discourse. In this context, the formal elements that constitute "deviation" and the strategies used by artists to convey meaning are identified. Notably, contemporary artists are observed to develop critical perspectives by incorporating deviations into their imagery as a means of visual expression.
Over time, the use of deviations in imagery has varied both visually and conceptually across different periods. Artists have consistently shaped their work in response to technological advancements, which provide new realms of subjectivity. In conclusion, deviations in imagery, utilized throughout art history, have been employed as tools of artistic expression in the paintings, photographs, and video works produced for this thesis. The research focuses on the concept of temporal ambiguity, which is considered the central theme underlying this phenomenon.
