Translation of Taboo Language: The Strategies Employed in Three Turkish Translations of Lady Chatterley'S Lover

Linguistic taboos present an important challenge for the translators and censoring the use of language occupies a particular place in the translation of taboo expressions. In addition to the linguistic constraints derived from the two different languages involved, translators also face some other constraints such as ideological considerations, publishing policies etc. while rendering the taboos which, at the end, results in employing certain strategies and resorting to certain translational solutions that can sometime be censorial. This thesis primarily aims to define and analyze the strategies employed in translating the taboo references of sexual and social nature in three different Turkish translations of D. H. Lawrence s Lady Chatterley s Lover released by different publishing houses in the same period of time (2012-2013). The second, but equally important aim is to classify the strategies most and least used in the translations and find the regularities of translation choices as w
