BÉLA BARTÓK’UN “OUT OF DOORS” ADLI PİYANO SÜİTİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively analyze the piano suite “Out of Doors” composed in 1926 by Béla Bartók, who is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century, and to question the issue of meaning in music through this analysis. The suite consists of five separate pieces that are not directly connected to each other in a programmatic way and reflect different representational scenes in the outdoors. The work, which is technically quite difficult, has an important position in the piano literature of the 20th century in terms of combining the understanding of non-tonal music with folkloric and modal elements, and effectively reflecting the subjects of pastoral life and nature sounds with an innovative musical writing. In the first part of the study, information about the methodology used is given. In the second part, how it is possible to attribute meaning to a piece of music and the difficulties that arise in the search for musical meaning are examined. In the third part, the pieces are analyzed historically, musically and technically, their connections in the composer's life are revealed and the narrative details they represent are interpreted from a performer's point of view.
