Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive examination of wind as a subject in art. Starting from the impact of wind, a natural phenomenon caused by differences in atmospheric pressure, on human life, an extensive research has been conducted on how wind is perceived in different cultures and mythologies, and how these perceptions are transformed into artistic expressions. Theoretical and practical studies have been carried out on the nature of wind, its effects on matter, and the ways in which these effects are materialized on different mediums. Using digital photography, video, and sound media the ways in which the dynamic movements of wind can be rescaled in art has been investigated. Specifically, the relationship between wind and the concept of movement, as well as its impact on aesthetic perception, has been explored. In this context, the representation of intense forms of wind, such as storms and hurricanes, in art has been critically evaluated. Furthermore, examples from different disciplines where wind is used as a medium in the contemporary art field have been examined. The thesis aims to offer new perspectives on how wind dynamics can be conceptually processed within artistic practice.
