Abstract

In our study on Italians and their activities in the architectural environment in Istanbul at late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the contributions of Italians to the architectural and artistic environment of the period are analysed by investigating the actors such as architects, contractors and craftsmen active in the construction field in Istanbul, as well as the actors producing and selling construction materials and the leading construction companies of the period. The reflections of Turkish-Italian political relations and the changing political environment on the Italian community in Istanbul during the period from the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy (1861) to the establishment of the Italian Republic (1946), which also defines the temporal boundary of our study, were investigated. In this context, newspapers, magazines and novels of the period were consulted. The Italian presence in the architectural environment in Istanbul is analysed in the framework of its institutions, residences and leading businesses. The residences and institutions are marked on the Goad Insurance Map (1905) to reveal the Italian residential area. The buildings are analysed in terms of architectural style. Focusing on the Italian architects active in Istanbul, the study analyses their education, professional activities, their identity as educators and the innovations they brought to the architectural environment. An inventory regarding the architects has been prepared. The Italian actors who were active in the construction field of the period have been identified through trade yearbooks, and the works, applications, production techniques and visuals of the products of Italian manufacturers, sellers, craftsmen and contractors during the years they were active are represented with advertisement pages. In this way, in addition to the activities of Italian actors, the preferences, production techniques, application methods, products and job descriptions of the period have been revealed and their contributions to our architectural history have become visible.
