16th century was a century when serious changes and transformations began in the political, military, economic and social fields of the Ottoman Empire. The struggles for the throne, the long wars, and the subsequent internal and external events in the second half of this century are a turning point for the Ottoman Empire. Although some studies have been carried out on this century, no sufficient study has been done to concretize the events with statistical data and interpret them in a text.
In this study, the banditry events, which were expressed as "Celâli" or "banditry" in Ottoman Histories, occurred in the 16th century and were one of the most important problems that deeply affected the Ottoman socio-economic life, were examined. First of all, the terminology of banditry was examined historically and conceptually. Afterwards, the reasons for the banditry incidents and the dimensions of the banditry movements in the examined period were revealed. The measures taken by central and local authorities to prevent banditry movements are examined in a separate section. Finally, the legal dimension of banditry movements and the issue of punishing the perpetrators are emphasized.
In this thesis study, the information obtained from the main sources of the period examined was converted into numerical data, and then interpreted with statistical visuals such as tables and graphs, trying to concretely reveal the banditry movements and their effects in Ottoman Anatolia.
