Pars H. Determination of Parenting Stress, Caregiving Burden and Coping Self-
Efficacy in the Primary Caregiver of Esophageal Atresia Children, Graduate School
of Health Sciences of Hacettepe University, Epidemiology Program, Master's Thesis,
Ankara, 2024. The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of stress, selfefficacy
and caregiving burden in the foundations of the concept of mental health. This
study was conducted as an analytical cross-sectional study to evaluate parenting stress,
caregiving burden and coping self-efficacy in primary caregivers of children with
esophageal atresia and to determine the factors associated with caregiving burden. A
specially designed data collection form, Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale, Coping Self-
Efficacy Scale and Parental Stress Scale were used to collect 139 valid data. Analyses
were performed with IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and IBM SPSS Amos 21 and Jamovi
package programs. It was determined that 68.3% of the participants did not have a light
caregiving burden. There was a statistically significant low level negative relationship
between the Caregiving Burden Scale and Coping Self-Efficacy Scale scores, and a
statistically significant moderate level positive relationship between the Parenting Stress
Scale scores. In the structural model examined, Coping Self-Efficacy was not found to
mediate the relationship between Parenting Stress and Caregiving Burden. In logistic
regression analysis, parenting stress was found to be associated with caregiving burden
(OR=1.1, 95% CI=1.1-1.2) when coping self-efficacy, gender, history of miscarriage,
gestational age and presence of additional chronic diseases in the child were controlled.
History of miscarriage and gestational age were found to be the other variables associated
with caregiving burden. In order to determine moderate-heavy and heavy caregiving
burden according to the Parenting Stress Scale score, cut-off points were created using
ROC curves and Youden index. The area under the ROC curve was 0.765 and the cut-off
point of the scale was determined as 22.Those with a parenting stress scale score of 22 and
above, a history of miscarriage and gestational age between 31-40 years can be considered
in the group to be prioritized in terms of caregiving burden. The findings of the study will
be a guiding source for hospital administrators, policy makers related to chronic diseases
and health professionals working in this field in terms of planning future interventions.
