The periodontium consists of gingiva, periodontal ligament, cement and alveoler bone as supportive tissues of teeth. Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease, which begins at gingiva with the spread of inflammation to supportive tissues of teeth, characterized by deteriotation of connective tissue, collapse of alveolar bone and weakening of epithelial attachment following the proliferation through the root surface. Although bacterial plaque is a primary etiologic cause, the host defense system plays a major role in pathogenesis. In previous studies, it is shown that chronic periodontitis causes damage in cortical bone in addition to collapse in alveolar bone. In this research, the evaluation of mandibular cortical index at the mandibular cortex distal to the mental foramen, from the panoramic radiographs of 601 chronic periodontitis patients is revealed. The panoramic images of patients have been taken at he same panoramic device which has 1.3 constant magnification rate. The individuals who were evaluated with clinical features and panoramic radiography have been divided into two groups, as disease and control group. Subsequently, mandibular cortical index values, obtained from the panoramic radiographs of these two groups have been compared with statistical methods.
