Plastik Sanatlarda Qualia Nosyonu
Özet
In the present thesis titled as “the Notion of Qualia in the Plastic Arts”, proposes a
perspective with personal art practices on qualia as a fundamental philosophical problem. In
line with a research that combines the fields of plastic arts and philosophy of mind, the
possibilities of meaning of qualia, which is visible in the artworks are investigated. The
necessity of establishing a dialogue between art and philosophy, which are two separate
cultural fields in order to make sense of personal art practices is made possible by the image
as the conveys of thought. The way of explain the meaning of the image in the artwork,
indicates a perceptual difference between the object and the image. Basically, this difference
is the notion of qualia, which is directly related to perception as a subjective cognitive
faculty. Accordingly, qualia is used as an epistemological method to create a personal plastic
language. The act here is the insertion of a subjective reality into the artwork. The notion of
qualia is examined and discussed in relation to artworks within a narrow framework of qualia
property dualism and physicalism. The thesis is a record of personal artistic practices.
